The Perth Arts Company offers five great workshops to schools, libraries and community centres. For children and adults.
FOR CHILDREN
Cartoons, comics and caricatures
Learn how to draw your own comic characters, cartoons and caricatures. The workshops appeal to all ages and abilities (8-16 year-olds probably more suited) and offer the opportunity to turn ideas into finished artwork. Invent your own superhero, design your own comic or learn to draw caricatures of your nearest and dearest. Strangely drawn? They will be!
Cost: $300. Gst is not applicable.
Workshop length: normally two hours. Optimum numbers attending: 20. Age range 7-15
The tutor: Ex-Disney artist Mick Devine has provided colourful entertainment at children’s festivals, corporate functions and at the very poshest of parties all over Europe and, of late, here in Perth. His clients include The London Stock Exchange, The Paris Opera House, The Albert Hall, Elton John and The Royal Family. Comedy/Craft: "Escape from the Planet Zock"
A two hour workshop for teenagers and younger using sock puppets to create a two minute stand-up routine. "You are from the planet Zock and have just landed here on Earth. You have two minutes to convince us you can stay. If you are successful some things called 'parents' will collect you later. How odd you look with that... 'thing' growing out of your arm."
That 'thing' is part of you. During the workshop you will make the puppet (socks supplied, mums, dads and others welcome to stay and help), learn and perform your pitch. Together you could rule the world!
Price: $300 for a two hour workshop. Gst is not applicable. Optimum numbers attending: 20. Age range 7-15

Write a play
This two-hour workshop will enable participants to write (at least) the outline for a short play. We will split those attending into smaller, age-appropriate groups and then describe the necessary ingredients for a great show: a good idea ( we will provide some of those ) , a plot, the need for conflict between characters, use of the spoken word, visual interest and resolution. Participants can either remain in their groups to produce a play with multiple characters or can work alone to produce a one-person monologue. The scripts and ideas will be presented to the group towards the end of the workshop. Next stop... Broadway.
The tutor: Mick's show 'The Lucky Country' is currently touring Sydney schools and community centres and his show 'Mummy' was nominated for the 2015 Artrage Theatre Awards at Perth's Fringe World. He wrote and produced the sell-out 'Cinderella - it's a panto Jim but not as we know it' for the Ellenbrook Arts in 2011.
Cost: $300 for a two hour workshop. Gst is not applicable. Optimum numbers attending: 20. Age range: 7-15.

FOR ADULTS
Pottymouth
A one-hour illustrated presentation of Mick Devine's poetry book "Pottymouth"
Some years ago I became a parent. Hard work? Not really, not unless you’re the one who actually has to squeeze the little darlings out. However, looking after them is another story: children make a lot of noise and they require your undivided attention so you soon notice that the walls are closing in and that the cellmate to whom you’re chained is on a dirty protest. By cruel coincidence, this period of incarceration coincides exactly with the decade you’d planned to spend writing an Oscar-winning film. Hence the far-away look in my eye as I whiled away those years trapped in McDonalds parties, park playgrounds and school concerts: you see, my darlings, although I always turned up, sometimes I wasn’t all there.
This book contains the sort of stuff I was thinking about when I should have been minding the kids.
For 6-12 year-olds. Cost $150 for one hour. Available throughout the year.
